[eMINTS] algebraic equations

I have started by having the students write number sentences similar to translating a language. ie

Three cookies were on the table. John ate two cookies. How many were left?

                    3 - 2 = c (cookies left)

Then get more complicated:

What percent of 75 is 16?

    x (75) = 16

After practice, I have them write story problems and their expressions on newsprint in a cooperative "graffitti math" activity.

Subject: [eMINTS] algebraic equations

I need some ideas and problems for addressing the GLE:
represent a mathematical situation as an expression or number sentence using a letter or symbol.

This was our lowest score from last year's MAP and it was a DOK level 2 constructed response question.

How do you teach this?
Thanks,
Julie
