[eMINTS] standard measurement idea

Do you have access to a sand table? Instructions to build a castle using
measured sand for each part might be a fun idea.

Are you allowed to use the microwave? Technically, they might fit into the
no heat criteria. If you are, there are several no cook recipes where you
might be able to melt some ingredients and add others.

I am looking for any activities to teach standard measurement or ways to aid
memorization of conversions. I'd like to do some cooking, but we aren't
allowed to use heat so any no cook recipes to use ounces, pounds, cups etc.
would be appreciated.

I will be looking through recipes this weekend for my 8th grade FACS but
most recipes will require some melting such as in a microwave. I'll email
you if I find some that I think will work. There is the old play dough
recipe and it seems to me there is an old candy recipe that is a cold mix.

That's a good idea--we can probably use the microwave.

Chex mix recipes are an idea too. It requires cereals, chips, etc.
Another idea is trail mix.

Have you thought about using colored sand to show how many
of whatever = a whatever. I would use different colors so
they can see it and count it after it is done. To take the
lesson into a science lesson, use different densities of
liquids to show some conversions. I use food coloring to
color my liquids such as corn syrup, rubbing alchol, water,
and I forgot the other liquid to show density but can be
used w/conversions as well.

One idea that I have done in the past was finding out which cup was the
best buy... I went to local fast food resturants and gas stations and
found out how much their cups in small, medium, and large held and the
cost.... I than had the kids find out exactly how much liquid they held
by putting water in the cups and measuring it, some found out that the
cup held more or less than it said it held... we than compared how much
liquid was in the cup and the amount it costed and found out which was
the best buy.... This might kind of incorporate your objective.... It is
also a fun lesson...
