One year, to teach pre/suffixes, I had students make a chocolate
dictionary. First we studied definitions and examples of pre/suffixes.
Then, the kids had to create and define a certain number of words in their
dictionary, all using "chocolate" as the root word. I gave creativity
points, so kids had their dictionaries in the shape of Hershey's kisses,
wrapped in foil, or sandwiched between two brown circles, Oreo style. One
kid wrote his words and definitions on adding machine tape and had it
streaming out of a chocolate syrup bottle. They had a lot of fun,and they
really had to think to define their made-up words.
