Gaggle is expanding and exploring its applications.  There is a charge if you want to remove the ads.  I have used the free version with quite a bit of success and teach the students how to avoid the ads. This is something they will need to know as consumers. Teachers create classes and students have accounts.  It is secure and monitored by a good staff at Gaggle for unwanted "words."  They have created a VERY extensive word list for what is allowed and what is not.  Plus a school or teacher can add to the list. ...easy to use and set up!
 
The free version is quite satisfactory.

Hello,
I find it a major concerns also that the public schools do block the blogs and wiki sites.  This is really hard to get around.  One of my schools is using the Gaggle.net to do their blogs and wikis and forums.  Each student has a locker and all comments and emails can be viewed by teacher.  It also has the feature of flagging any suspicious content. 
Of course, Gaggle is a paid service and the idea of using any open source or free ware is still open for discussion and I am interested to hear any thoughts.

I've started a personal website on blogspot and hae a school one through
Edublogs.  At our school all blogspot sites are blocked.  That's
something to think about when choosing a blog site to use with your
students if you are wanting to make connections with others.  I don't
know if other schools block as many sites as mine does though.

I was wondering how you think Edublogs compares to other blogging sites
like Blogger/Blogspot. This is the one I use; only that's where I set up
my first class blogs. I use several to implement instruction, post
pictures, etc. in addition to my classroom website.

I have several teachers that use blogs as their websites (I teach a
workshop on that very topic). Here is one example from a junior high
teacher.

If you want a lot of control over your site, then using a blog is not
going to be the option for you. But, if you don't care much about having
control over how it looks, then you might really like it. Let me know if
you have any further questions as you make your decision.

Moodle has to be on your school server doesn't it?  I do not want to

If you are just using this in the the media center I would assume you
are not using it to create graded activities. You are using it more
for
resources that students can access to supplement an in class activity
or
something you are having them do. If this is the case you would only
need to make a certain number of user logins that students use at each
station. For example, station1---user1, etc.

For teachers they could each have their own login and you can give
them
rights to make changes or not. The teachers or you could then create
the
resource that is needed.

I think this is a wonderful topic for discussion.  I am making the

this year from the emints classroom to the building library/Media
Center.   I need to create a new page for our library and am not sure

the best format. Not all rooms are emints but all the students use the
Media Center to complete projects. That means this page needs to
provide
a lot of direction to the students as well as assistance for the
teachers.

I considered Moodle as we work on curriculum for the Library Media
Center but for handling 650+ students and teachers that seems right
now
to me overwhelming. A wiki page would be a fun way but do I have too
many areas that need a more stationary type place like I could provide
with a plain ol' ordinary web page?  Plus I need it to be flexible
since
the age level using this page is from 2nd grade and possilby younger
to
parents and teachers. And this age range really has a bigger technical
expertise range.

I would appreciate any input anyone wishes to offer.
