[eMINTS] MySpace - alternative

Our Intermediate School computer teacher has had some of these same
thoughts. We wouldn't suddenly send our kids into a car to drive at 16. We
teach them the rules of the road, safety, etc. She has been seriously
looking at Imbee (a social network designed for young people) as a way to
introduce and model safe ways to use them (including thoughts on having
parent workshops, etc.). I do not know anything else about it, but the
address is http://www.imbee.com/ if you are interested in looking at it.
The site apparently offers parental controls and has information on using it
in the classroom. If I understand it correctly, you can't view pages unless
you are a "friend". Again, I don't know anything else, and haven't really
looked at it at all.

I agree with you on the teacher modeling on myspace. A
number of my students have asked me to view their Xanga,
MySpace, Flixster and FaceBook. I am glad to have them add
me so that I can help make sure they are being safe.
