[eMINTS] MySpace

I do believe that we can't have too many workshops or notes to remind parents of the potential and/or possibilities out there. Perhaps we could encourage/teach parents to set up a 'my space' so they can become more informed of their children's activities. Looking at this two-fold, this will also open the door to help parents see social networking websites.

Social websites are a popular trend among adults and students. It is our influence and responsibility to help children be responsible when using the internet. What if we could help them learn about social networks and show them how others can view their information? Obviously they think parents don't have a clue!

My Space has been around quite some time as it was developed in 2002. I believe I could share my "My Space" with students and model good practices.

Would children want to share their space with teachers?

Could 'My Space' become a tool?

How will we help parents to be more technology savvy?

How will we encourage parents to become more involved in technology safety in the home?

Just some thoughts,
Gayle

We have several fifth grade students who have created MySpace accounts at
home. They are not able to access them at school, but they do discuss the
accounts with their friends at school.

Our principal would like to address this issue with parents. Many of the
girls have suggestive nicknames and/or comments posted. We have done some
internet safety classes with parents in the past. Does anyone have other
ideas?? How have other schools dealt with MySpace??
