[eMINTS] Study Island Questions

I have never used Study Island and am curious thanks to all the posts on
this list. Additionally, some staff and administrators from the school
I work with are interested.

Could someone help demonstrate how this tool fits the eMINTS model?
Where does the cooperative learning and inquiry fit? Are there
possibilities for authentic assessment? Are there any other aspects of
eMINTs and/or constructivism achieved through SI?

Thanks!

I really like using S.I. because it has helped me with predicting my MAP
line-up (BB,B,P,A) and moving kids from one score to another before MAP
testing begins. I also like comparing my kids with those in the state
using S.I.- another great prediction tool to keep me focused and hitting
the areas I should and reteaching those I may have lacked on. I give it
4 stars!

Crestview Middle School in the Rockwood School District is piloting it
this
year for grades 6-8. From what I've heard from teachers, they love it.
We
don't yet have any data to back up how it's helping kids, but the
students
love the games and are very motivated to use it.

We are using SI for the first year in our building, so here's what I've
found out so far:
1. If you contact them, they will give you a temporary password and free
trial to use for teacher exploration.
2. If you sign up, they will send a rep. out to go over all of the
features if you want.
3. While I use it in my classroom and let the kids work in pairs for
practice purposes, I think that often times it would be better to have
them work individually on their own computer. So, a lab would be great,
or they can just take turns.
4. With new concepts or for review, I often put it on the SMART board
with just a made-up login name for the kids to take turns coming up
answering questions. The goal is to earn a "blue ribbon" for each GLE
so we're going through that as a class for math right now.
5. Students can access it from home and the site gives you, the teacher,
the option of, when you generate reports, to specify the time of day
that work is accepted. So...you can limit the results to only 9-4 and
any practice a student has done at home, perhaps with help, will be
excluded.
6. I believe the website totes that research supports the use of their
program though I have never looked at it.
7. The kids can see their scores and overall performance every time they
login. I'm not sure if they're printable. However, the teacher has the
option to either check scores at her leisure, or set a schedule for
times/days that the reports are e-mailed to her/him.
Hope this helps! I can't wait to see next year with our scores if we
can see improvement!

I would like information regarding the following from those who have or
are using Study Island:
1. Is it best used in a lab setting?
2. Are there smartboard only classroom applications for teachers
without computers for students in their classrooms?
3. Can students access it from home?
4. Can reports be generated by student?
5. Have you seen MAP scores improve and are those gains tied to student
use of Study Island?
