This is the URL for the official DIBELS website.
http://dibels.uoregon.edu/ All of the materials, directions, and forms
for each grade level are available as a free download.
DIBELS are a set of seven assessment measures that were explicitly
developed to measure the Big Ideas of Beginning Reading. The assessments
include Initial Sound Fluency, Letter Naming Fluency, Word Use Fluency,
Phoneme Segmentation Fluency, Nonsense Word Fluency, Oral Reading
Fluency, and Retell Fluency (depending on grade level). Typically
they're given 3-4 times per year to students in K-3. They may be given
to "high risk" or "some risk" students up to once a week to determine
how well they are progressing toward a specific literacy goal between
benchmarks. When I was in the classroom, my students loved them! Even
students reading above grade level wanted to take them so they could
chart their progress on their individual graph. As a result, I gave the
Oral Reading Fluency and Retell Fluency to every student once a month
(and more often to students reading below grade level). Word Use Fluency
is the only other assessment targeted for 3rd grade, but depending on
the reading level of your students, you may want to access some of those
designed for lower grades.
The assessments are very quick to administer either on paper or
electronically. (You do get better with practice.) The management is
much easier if you're able to administer utilizing a Palm and sync the
results with Wireless Generation... but that is not a free service. :)

My school is looking into beginning to use the Dibels test but were
under the impression that it must be administered to all students, not
just those struggling.
I get the impression from your email that you use it to monitor and
guide instruction just for those reading below standards...is this true?
Is anyone else using it only for struggling readers? This would be
ideal as it seems unnecessary to test those who are making adequate
progress.
Thanks alot!

Dibels.....great test for k-3....we're also using it for 4-5. The 4-5
is
just an oral reading test with retell. We will be adding some questions
to the retell next year to better assess comprehension. I know dibels
goes through 6th grade....don't know what could be used for 7-9.... It
is
a simple assessment with tests to progress monitor students who are
below
their benchmark every two weeks with benchmark tests at the beginning,
middle, and end of the year. We use it to guide instruction and group
students for additional help. It's truly just a screening....so we find
it useful in that way. I would check out the dibels site....
