[eMINTS] eMINTS Digest, Vol 41, Issue 21

We use Study Island both in the lab and as a classroom activity. In my room we each have our own Blue Ribbon on the wall and as a student passes an activity and receives a ribbon from the program, they add a star to their ribbon. They are trying to fill up their ribbon. Our lab teacher has designated specific times throughout the months that they will work on Study Island during their lab time and students may go to the lab in the mornings before school to work and they can access SI from home. I pull up the report once or twice a week for us to add stars and in many areas it has assisted in mastery of a skill. I make assignments based on what we are working on. For example we are learning to write persuasive paragraphs and there is a lesson on this, so Friday we went to the lab and everyone worked on that topic. They were excited, some received a blue ribbon on this lesson and moved on to another, some didn't and will continue to work on this lesson. It is also a good tool to have if a student finishes an assignment and needs something to work on - educational activity!
Marsha Jo

1. Not sure what you mean here, but I would recommend having a quiet
time/place for it so they can concentrate.
2. I suppose you could do quizzes together, but it would be hard to keep
everyone paying attention
3. Yes
4. They can see their achievement level/percentages on their menu beside
each category (which, coincidentally, is a standard)
5. To soon to tell here...

We are using SI for the first year in our building, so here's what I've
found out so far:
1. If you contact them, they will give you a temporary password and free
trial to use for teacher exploration.
2. If you sign up, they will send a rep. out to go over all of the
features if you want.
3. While I use it in my classroom and let the kids work in pairs for
practice purposes, I think that often times it would be better to have
them work individually on their own computer. So, a lab would be great,
or they can just take turns.
4. With new concepts or for review, I often put it on the SMART board
with just a made-up login name for the kids to take turns coming up
answering questions. The goal is to earn a "blue ribbon" for each GLE
so we're going through that as a class for math right now.
5. Students can access it from home and the site gives you, the teacher,
the option of, when you generate reports, to specify the time of day
that work is accepted. So...you can limit the results to only 9-4 and
any practice a student has done at home, perhaps with help, will be
excluded.
6. I believe the website totes that research supports the use of their
program though I have never looked at it.
7. The kids can see their scores and overall performance every time they
login. I'm not sure if they're printable. However, the teacher has the
option to either check scores at her leisure, or set a schedule for
times/days that the reports are e-mailed to her/him.
Hope this helps! I can't wait to see next year with our scores if we
can see improvement!
