Here is a fun, educational and worthy project for your class to do during
the holidays or all year long. It's called FreeRice. The operators of the
site give you a vocabulary word. If you pick the right definition you will
be giving 20 grains of rice to feed the world's hungry. I know that doesn't
sound like much but when you have a lot of people playing it adds up. Since
October 7 of this year players have been able to donate over 4 billion
grains. How are they able to donate? Each time you get a correct answer an
ad appears at the bottom of the page from advertisers like Home Depot and
Sirius.  The advertising dollar pays for the rice. The good news is that the
ads are unobtrusive. If I hadn't read that they appear I wouldn't have even
noticed. Even if you feel like your class should not participate, give it a
try yourself.
