Thanks, Maureen! Do we have copies of released items for each grade who
will take the MAP?

Dear Rosemary (and all other eMINTS teachers from other states),
The MAP is the Missouri Assessment Program. It is the state tests that
we give in Missouri in Communication Arts and Math in grades 3 - 8. In
Utah you have the UPASS, in Maine the state-wide tests are being
revised, and in other states there are yet more names for the tests.
All state-wide tests have become very high stakes with NCLB (No Child
Left Behind) and AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress)as you know.
What the teachers in the posts about MAP night are referring to are
ideas about how to involved parents in understanding how to help
teachers prepare children to take the state-wide tests, how important
the tests are, and what some of the items on the tests are like.
Nearly all states provide "released items" or "practice items" that
teachers can use to help their students learn to take the tests. Check
with your state departments of education to find out how you can
access
the released or practice items for your state tests. Having parents
see
what some of the items are has been a great way to get them to
understand what is being asked of their children, how difficult some
of
the questions are and how important it is for them to provide
out-of-school experiences (such as reading, going to the library,
museums, etc) with their children to help them understand complex
concepts that are on many of the tests.
Please share the strategies and ideas that you have in your states for
preparing students for the state-wide tests they must take. The
purpose
of the list is to share ideas and generate discussion.
Hope this helps.
