[eMINTS] Movie Maker in the Classroom

TRACIE GONES GONEST at branson.k12.mo.us
Thu Jan 18 15:13:09 CST 2007

I did a Movie Maker workshop at the MORENet conference in October and
have my handout on my website:
http://www.branson.k12.mo.us/school_links/primary/gonest/MORENet%20conference.htm

Most of the handout is how to use MM, but the last page has a chart of
ideas for all subject areas. I haven't personally done all the ideas,
but there are some for most grades. My 2nd graders have done movies
from "how-to" papers. They took pictures of each step and narrated by
reading their report. This year we are working on making movies from
our animal research reports. They will write the report, find
pictures/video to illustrate, and then discuss a current issue or
problem for that animal (endangered species, spay/neuter, etc.). The
movie will encourage viewers to help their animal in some way.

Hope this is helpful!

Good morning!

Our training session last night covered Multimedia Projects. I was
wondering what others are doing with Movie Maker in your rooms? Are
you
integrating it into WebQuests or other classroom activities? What
types of projects are you doing?

This is what I have done -
http://www.center.k12.mo.us/edtech/powervocab/index.htm. This was
a project where a group of kids would choose a process word.
(Analyze,
infer, predict, etc.) They define the word in their own terms, solve
a
problem that requires them to applying the process word, and finally
develop a script (with transitions, key vocabulary addressed, etc.)
explaining what their word means and the process of applying it in
solving a problem. So the video shows all this along with their
explanation as they are working through a given problem. The idea
with
this is that it reaches beyond the basic facts and into the processes
for working through problems - including MAP testing.

I would love to know what else is being done with Movie Maker in the
classroom!
Thanks!
Colleen

Hi Kelly! Below is a page where I compiled websites from last year to
help with MAP preparation and provide resources for teachers. I
checked
all the links, so they should all work. Let me know if you find any
broken ones.

My kids did wonderful movies about the branches of government last
year.
We worked in groups of 3-4. Each child researched a branch of
government or the constitution. The kids then came together and wrote
a
script. They used photographs and narrated. The results were
awesome!

looking for a
publisher peole think is good for this. We have harcourt and aren't
very
pleased.

We don't have a text and as far as I know aren't buying one. We are
however order nonfiction readers that meet the science GLE's. There
are
several reasons for this. One is we noticed students scored lower in
nonfiction than fiction on the MAP test. Another reason is that
teachers are feeling so pressed to cover math and communication arts
that it is easy to skip social studies and science.

I don't know if the whole district is buying these or just my
building.
I'm excited about using them for guided reading, but I'm also looking
for resources for activities to meet the GLE's for science so we can
do
hands-on. I sent a request about this a couple of weeks ago.

I just thought I'd share. I know not everyone has the same options,
but I think buying the little readers and resources is probably less
expensive than many textbook adoptions.

Our district used to provide us with a license for Reading 1-z but no
longer do. Does anyone have any reading sights that are like reading
a-z that they know about or sights the give you both printable readers
and activities that go with the readers.
