[eMINTS] burning video files to dvd

I need help with these issues:
Windows Movie Maker:
-I save movie created with music and photos as dv-avi- burn to a dvd- it won't play in my dvd players. I tried 2 different players

I used Dazzle video converter to import video from my camcorder. I did this from Windows Movie Maker. It worked great. I could import the video clips into Windows Movie Maker and it plays on my computer but won't play on my dvd player either, after burning.

I saved movie created in Windows Movie Maker, imported that movie into ULead software, burned to a dvd- it worked then????

I then tried to take the video files (wmv) that I imported from my camcorder to import them into iMOVIE- wouldn't recognize the format.

I finally used Photo Story 3, purchased the software to burn to dvd, that works just fine but I want it to work in Movie Maker also. Online help says it will, I'm just having trouble. Anyone successful with this?

Also, if video is saved to an external drive and imported from that drive into video editing software, saved to external drive as the movie file, then burned to a dvd, should that play on my dvd player? I tried that as well and it won't play. I wondered if those files need to exist on my hard drive for the burn.
