[eMINTS] email accounts for students

I used email with my 3rd graders last year and several years before
that. It was another way I could communicate with them about a
particular assignment on a one to one basis when there wasn't enough
time in the classroom to do so.

On that same thought, it was a way for me to connect personally with
them, asking questions about their life, offering them encouragement, or
just making contact with them. Many of my former students still email
me about different happenings in their lives or just to say hi.

We also used it to contact experts and ask questions about a particular
subject. Authors often have email addresses on their websites. We also
contacted community members and shared projects of interest or invited
them to visit our room. Making a connection with other classrooms
across the country is another way we used email. Students would have
email pals from different parts of the country or world. They shared
ideas and learned a lot about each other. It is a valuable communication
tool and helped get the students writing.

To monitor the accounts, I used Gaggle for the email. As an
administrator of the site, I controlled filters on the emails and was
able to access anyone's account at any time. The filters would bump an
email into my account before it reached the student. I would then have
the choice to delete the email or OK it for delivery.

Hope that helps,

Subject: [eMINTS] email accounts for students

As part of our district tech plan and the NETS- for students'
guidelines, we have email accounts for middle and high school students.
I am interested in learning more about the following or anything else
you feel is applicable:

1.	How do you use these accounts in an instructional/educational
way?
2.	Are student accounts really necessary?
3.	How do you monitor and enforce the guidelines of no bullying,
etc. through email?

Thanks for your input. Our administration is really weighing/debating
this issue. All your feedback will be a great help.

Thanks,

Jill Meadows
